Ah yes, squats—the exercise everyone loves to hate, but one of the most valuable movements you can train. Squatting isn’t just a gym thing; it’s a fundamental human movement that shows up in daily life, from getting out of a chair to picking something up off the floor. The truth is, there’s no better bang-for-your-buck exercise for building lower body strength and total-body fitness. And the good news? Squats can be modified to fit every body type, training history, and goal, so yes, you can keep squatting in a way that works for you now and sets you up to keep moving well for decades to come.

If squats feel stiff, painful, or just “off,” it’s usually not about one single joint, it’s about how your ankles, knees, hips, and core work together. Limited ankle mobility can throw everything off. Weak or poorly controlled knees and hips can make the movement feel unstable or painful. And if your core and pelvis can’t hold a strong, braced position, your body will start stealing motion from places it shouldn’t. Squat depth and form will look different for everyone based on individual anatomy and mobility, but one thing will always remain the same, pain isn’t something you should just push through and ignore.

The goal isn’t a “perfect” squat, it’s a strong, controlled, pain-free squat that fits your body. When you improve mobility where you need it, build strength where you’re lacking it, and clean up how your body controls the movement, squats stop feeling like a problem and start feeling like something you want to be doing for your own health. If squatting has been something you’ve been avoiding because of pain or stiffness, that’s usually a sign there’s a root cause worth addressing, not give up on one of the most important movements you can train.
