Deadlifts Got Your Back Screaming For Help?

Deadlifts often get blamed the moment low back pain shows up. But in most cases it’s not the movement itself, it’s how your body is tolerating load to the spine. Your back is designed to bend, brace, and handle force, especially during movements like deadlifts and other hinging patterns. The issue usually comes down to preparation, along with other factors like technique, fatigue, and how quickly training volume or intensity has increased recently. Avoiding these aggravating movements outright might calm symptoms down in the short term, but it also reduces your body’s ability to handle them long term. So if your goal is to get back to deadlifting and other hinging exercises, there is a better way to recovery.

The better approach is short term adjustment, not long term avoidance. That might mean temporarily modifying factors like range of motion, load, tempo, or even the exercise variation. In regards to deadlifts that might mean elevating the bar on blocks, using lower percentages, slowing things down to build control, or using a trap bar variation. Adjustment also means dialing in how you move. Improving hip hinge mechanics and core and spine control are crucial here.

With a good plan and consistent progression, most people can return to deadlifts in a relatively short timeframe, often within a couple of months depending on the severity of the initial pain. But by gradually increasing load, reinforcing good movement patterns, and building strength where you need it most, your back becomes more resilient and capable. If you want to come back stronger than before, without worrying about your back flaring up again, get the help you need instead of constantly guessing what steps to take next. If you need more convincing that your pain can get better, and it’s “just the way it is” or it’s “because of my age”, take a look at what a few of our patients have had to say.

“The level of individual attention he gives each patient is a very rare thing to find these days and really helps you to understand the root cause of your issues.”
